Residential Code requirement for safety glass near doors

Glazing_Code_Hazardous locatiion_door

As mentioned in previous posts, the International Residential Code (R308.4) stipulates when safety glass must be used throughout a home.  The code includes seven specific locations where safety glass is required.

Section R308.4.2 addresses glass which has been installed near doors. The code requires safety glass when the nearest vertical edge of the glass is within 24 inches of the door’s edge, in a closed position.  This requirement is only applicable when the bottom edge of the glass is also within 60 inches of the floor or walking surface.

There are exceptions to this code, which include; decorative glazing, direction of door swing, closets, and intervening walls.
