Residential Code requirement for crawl space access

Crawl space opening_Code_Underfloor

The residential code (R408.4) requires access to the crawlspace, either through the floor or a side wall.   The minimum dimensions for the floor access is 18 inches by 24 inches, while the minimum wall dimensions are 16 inches by 24 inches.

The size of the access opening may also depend on whether mechanical equipment has been placed in the crawlspace.  The mechanical section of the code (M1305.1.4) requires the opening/passageway to be large enough to remove the largest appliance, but not less than 30 inches high by 22 inches wide.
