Residential Code requirement for safety glazing near wet areas

Bathroom_Code_Glazing_Hazardous

There maybe several locations in a home that require safety glazing.  The residential code has at least seven specific instances where safety glazing must be installed due to the configuration of the surrounding construction.

Section R308.4.5 addresses glazing located in wet areas which includes; bathtubs, showers, swimming pools, saunas, etc.   Glazing located in one of these “wet” locations where the bottom edge is within 60” vertically of a walking surface, must meet the criteria for safety glass. The safety glass requirement does not pertain to glazing located more than 60” horizontally to the water edge.

To identify the correct type of glass, look for a permanently applied designation (bug) located somewhere on the pane or glazing.  Normally the manufacturers place this near a corner, and it may take a keen eye and a bit of searching to locate.
