The Residential Code (R319) sets a minimum standard for the size and placement of a home address. These minimums are especially important when it comes to fire and aid response, as valuable time can be wasted searching for a particular address during an emergency.
The letters or numbers must be plainly visible from the street, and placed over a contrasting background. The address must be made up of Arabic numbers, alphabetical letters, or a combination of both. The numbers must be at least 4 inches in height and ½ inch in width.
Lastly, if the home is located on a private road or driveway which cannot be seen from the main road, a monument, pole, sign, or some other form of address identification must be used for identification.
