Why is the Sarah Everard Murder Being Reinterpreted as a Battle Against Men in the UK?

The recent tragedy of the Sarah Everard murder has sparked significant public discourse and protest in the UK. However, there is a misconception that the movement is about a battle against men. This is far from the truth. The primary aim is to ensure that women can walk safely anywhere without fear of being attacked by predatory individuals. Unless you live in a super safe area, many women are scared to walk alone, even in broad daylight. Reinforcing this point, I have personally experienced an attack in public and do not view all men as attackers. Today, I live in a quiet, safe area and am not fearful. Unfortunately, this is not the case for many women.

To understand the essence of the movement, it is essential to look at the slogan: RECLAIM THE STREETS. What the protesters are demanding is the right to walk without fear. This is about empowering women to feel safe, to reclaim the spaces they were once hesitant to explore. This movement seeks to change a societal mindset that places women in dangerous situations simply because of their gender.

What Drives This Reaction?

While the Sarah Everard murder is undoubtedly tragic, several factors contribute to the public's strong reaction, making it a national conversation. First and foremost, could it be that the suspect was a police officer, which adds a layer of betrayal to an already sensitive issue? Alternatively, could it be a reflection of the societal tumult caused by the recent COVID-19 restrictions? For many, these unprecedented restrictions have led to feelings of oppression and revolt. The UK is in a situation where the government, through its policies like Brexit and imposing new restrictions, is perceived as driving the nation in a direction that many find unsuitable.

BLM and Societal Restrictions: There is also a comparison to the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests. While BLM focused on issues related to systemic racism and freedoms, were the recent protests against the curfew a reaction to perceived authority and restrictions? The apparent frustration with what feels like a lack of freedom under these restrictions is palpable. The BLM vandalism of statues, for instance, could be seen as a form of public expression, questioning authority and calling for recognition against perceived oppression. Was it about long-finished slavery, or was it about the current systems of oppression?

Protest Demands and Backlash

Unfortunately, not all reactions have been positive. There were some individuals who made vile anti-men comments in light of the Sarah Everard’s abduction and murder. When these incidents occur, it is crucial to maintain empathy and support for victims, as well as recognition of the important role men play in society. A recent example involves Baroness Jones of the Green Party, who suggested a 6 pm curfew for men, a claim that was met with public backlash. Similarly, a well-known British TV personality, David McCall, pointed out that some segments of the public accused of having an anti-male tone, leading to criticism and even cancellation protests, such as Davina McCall facing public criticism for sticking up for men. Such reactions often play into the echo chamber and can exacerbate the tensions within society.

Free Speech and Public Discourse

The importance of free speech in this scenario cannot be overstated. As Winston Churchill once said, 'some people’s idea of free speech is that they are free to say what they like but if anyone says anything back that is an outrage.' Public discourse must be grounded in mutual respect and understanding. Outrage is not a substitute for logical debate. It is essential to foster an environment where differing viewpoints can be expressed and understood, facilitating a more informed and compassionate society.

To conclude, the movement surrounding the Sarah Everard murder is about reclaiming safety for women.
