The Essential Guide to Avoiding Worst Cabins on a Cruise Ship

Cruising is a fantastic way to explore the world and enjoy a vacation at sea. However, the experience can be ruined if your cabin ends up in a less than ideal location. This guide provides you with insights into the worst cabin locations to avoid and tips to make your cruise experience more enjoyable.

Notable Areas to Avoid

1. Near the Elevators and Stairwells

When choosing a cabin, it's important to consider the proximity to high-traffic areas such as elevators and stairwells. These spots are often filled with foot traffic, loud noises, and the sounds of doors opening and closing. If noise is a concern, look for quieter, more secluded areas of the ship.

Dangerous Areas Below and Above Deck

2. Underneath the Pool Deck

Cabin locations directly beneath the pool or sun deck might experience noise from deck chairs being moved, children splashing, and other activities. This can be particularly disruptive, especially if you're planning to get some rest during the day.

3. Near the Nightclubs or Lounges

If you're sensitive to noise, cabins near entertainment venues can disturb your sleep due to music and crowds. Consider choosing a cabin that is away from these areas, especially if you plan to sleep during the night.

Motion-Sensitive Locations

4. At the Bow Front or Stern Back of the Ship

The bow and stern of the ship can experience more motion, especially in rough seas, making them less comfortable for those prone to seasickness. Additionally, the back of the ship may be closer to engine noise, which can be disruptive.

Dark and Uncomfortable Choices

5. Inside Cabins Without Windows

Cabin interiors can sometimes feel cramped and lack natural light, which can be uncomfortable for many travelers. If you prefer natural light and a more spacious feel, opt for an outside cabin or at least one with a view.

6. Cabins with Obstructed Views

Lower deck cabins or those near lifeboats may have obstructed views, which can diminish the overall experience. Choose a cabin with a view if you want to take in the scenic views of the ocean or the surrounding landscape.

My Personal Experience

Many cabins are located above or below the bridge at the bow. These are often marketed as "sunset verandahs," but if you're not particularly interested in watching the sunset, they might not be worth the extra cost. My personal experience with a cabin on the Celebrity Silhouette for an Adriatic cruise in October 2012 was forgettable. The weather was mostly rainy, and I had few chances to enjoy the sunset. By the end of the cruise, I decided not to book these cabins again. Instead, I recommend simply enjoying the sunset on the upper deck with a cocktail or beer without breaking the bank.

When selecting a cabin, consider your personal preferences and make sure to read reviews and check deck plans to make the best decision for your cruise experience.
