Underrated TV Series That Deserve More Attention
When it comes to discovering new and fantastic TV series, there's always something that goes unnoticed. These underrated TV series, despite their quality and critical acclaim, often fall through the cracks. Here are some of the best ones that are so underrated that they deserve more attention. Let's delve into the details of each series.
From
The only answer to the question 'What are some underrated TV series?' comes to my mind is 'From'. I know many of you haven't even heard about it. I watch so many series and am always eager to find new good series. However, 'From' never came to my attention until a friend recommended it to me. He didn't recommend it but simply said he was going to watch it because he heard it was good. I decided to give it a try, and I loved it. It's now in my list of favorite series, and with the release of its third-season episode one, it’s as awesome as always.
What makes 'From' so special is how it keeps you engaged, always in the edge of the seat, keeping your mind wandering about what's going to happen next. If you haven't watched it yet, I highly recommend you give it a try. It's available on Amazon Prime.
Picking Up the Pieces
Hill Street Blues - NBC (7 seasons)
Despite airing for seven seasons with critical acclaim and winning the Emmys, Hill St. was a diamond in the rough when it came to ratings. NBC kept the show on the air out of interest in providing quality television. This series blended comedy with drama, delving deeply into the personal lives of cops. It tackled tough issues such as corruption, police brutality, alcoholism, lack of resources, racism, and big-city politics, providing a standard for all television dramas that came after it. Interestingly, it was the first show to introduce the concept of the shaky camera.
The Dark Side
The Bridge - FX (2 seasons)
A dark, gritty, and intense drama with a fantastic cast, The Bridge is described as quirky. The characters are odd and unusual but not in a humorous way. What made this show great was also its undoing. It was simply too bleak for most viewers, and there were no comedic moments to balance that.
The Forgotten Drama
Southland - NBC (1 season), TNT (4 seasons)
One of the best police dramas of all time, Southland was praised by critics but never found a significant audience. It's a shame because this series is highly underrated. Give it a chance and you won't be disappointed.
A One-Season Wonder
Boom Town - NBC (2 seasons)
Clearly an influence on The Wire, this POV crime drama only lasted one full season despite receiving critical acclaim. It's a remarkable series that deserves more attention.
Dark and Decaying
Low Winter Sun - AMC (1 season)
Another show that was simply too bleak for a large audience, Low Winter Sun highlights the stand-out performance by Lennie James from The Walking Dead. The true star, however, is the city of Detroit, which was in a state of absolute decay during filming. The city looks decimated, adding to the dark and gritty atmosphere of the series.
A True Story
Mindhunter - Netflix (2 seasons)
A fascinating true story, Mindhunter is akin to watching a documentary. Fans are eagerly waiting for the third season, and the hope remains that it will be a reality.
A Timeless Drama
The News Room - HBO (3 seasons)
While the last two seasons were a bit dumbed down for ratings, I recommend watching the first season for its critical acclaim and strong storytelling. Although the stories will seem dated now, the performances and direction are top-notch.
The Killing
The Killing - FX (4 seasons)
The chemistry between Joel Kinnaman and Mireille Enos is palpable, making it through the slower parts of the series. This is a great series for those who enjoy intricate character development and a gripping storyline.
A Perfect Balance
Fargo - FX (4 seasons)
Perfectly walking the line between quirky comedy and dark drama, Fargo reminds us that people are generally good but also hilariously evil. It's a must-watch for anyone who loves a perfect blend of humor and dark intrigue.
A Must-Watch for Horror Fans
Castle Rock - Hulu (2 seasons)
Even those who are not horror fans will love Castle Rock. It's unusual, interesting, and very well acted. It delves into the origin story of Annie Wilkes from Misery, and Lizzy Caplan's performance is exceptional. Not to mention, "Mr. Man" is a standout line.
A Police Drama in Shadow
Detroit 1-8-7 - ABC (1 season)
One of the better police dramas of the era, Detroit 1-8-7 has a compelling plot. However, the era was becoming tired of police dramas, which made it a bit challenging to gain traction. Nevertheless, it's a show worth watching.
Edgy and Action-Packed
Creepshow - Shudder (3 seasons)
If you enjoyed HBO's Tales from the Crypt, you'll love Creepshow. A horror series that perfectly captures the essence of creepiness and oddness.
Creepy and Touching
Channel Zero - SyFy (4 seasons)
In a word, creepy. However, the series is also touching in its own way. It’s a must-watch if you're a fan of the genre.
A Drama in the Arena
Lights Out - FX (1 season)
It's the story of a washed-up heavyweight champ. Despite its high production quality, it lived in the shadow of better shows like Breaking Bad and was overshadowed by the era's glut of quality television.
The Unknown Hero
Luck - HBO (1 season)
A bit edgier than The Sopranos, but production costs killed the series. Despite its potential, the show never quite made its mark.
A New Lost
The River - ABC (1 season)
The River could have been the new Lost. Its potential was great, but it didn't quite reach the heights of its promise.
The Network Show
Vegas - CBS (1 season)
One of the better network shows of the time, Vegas unfortunately didn't live up to its potential due to high production costs and low ratings.
These underrated TV series are a testament to the depth and quality of TV content beyond mainstream hits. Give them a chance; you might just find your new favorite series.
